The need to know when visiting South Africa

Please read all the information thoroughly, and feel free to contact us
if you need any further assistance.

Malaria Advisory
While our lodge is located in a low-risk malaria area, this does not guarantee complete absence of risk. Occasionally, tours or hunts may venture into higher-risk regions. We recommend guests use insect repellent as needed, particularly during outdoor activities in the early morning and evening.
The likelihood of contracting malaria in our area is extremely low, and many of our past guests have opted not to take malaria prophylaxis due to potential side effects such as drowsiness. However, we strongly advise that you consult your healthcare provider for personalized medical advice before your trip.
Please note: We cannot accept responsibility for any health decisions made regarding malaria prevention.

Immunization Information
No immunizations are required for entry into South Africa.
However, the CDC recommends the Hepatitis A vaccine, as the virus can be contracted through contaminated food or water—regardless of where you are staying or dining. We suggest consulting your healthcare provider to determine which vaccinations are appropriate for your travel plans.

Flight Information
Guests typically depart from either Newark, NJ (United Airlines) or Atlanta, GA (Delta Airlines), arriving at O.R. Tambo International Airport (Johannesburg). From there, a short connecting flight to Polokwane’s Gateway International Airport is required. The same route applies in reverse upon departure.

Arrival in South Africa:
International flights usually land in Johannesburg between 5:00 PM and 7:00 PM. We recommend an overnight stay at our partner, Africa-Sky Boutique Hotel, located conveniently near the airport.
The following morning, you’ll take a 9:30 AM flight to Polokwane, where a Sand River Safari Lodge representative will meet you. You can expect to arrive at the lodge around noon, with time to get settled and complete rifle or bow orientation before heading out for your first afternoon hunt.

Alternative Routes:
While travel through Europe is possible, we’ve found that most guests are less satisfied with this option due to longer layovers and increased travel times.

Traveling with Children:

If you are traveling with minors (under 18 years old), an unabridged birth certificate is often required for entry into South Africa. We recommend confirming current regulations with your local Home Affairs office before travel.

Travel Light
Packing light? No problem. Our daily laundry service means you only need to bring three sets of clothing for your stay. Don’t forget a warm jacket for those cooler evenings.
